For Kids
Inveraray Jail is a great place for children to visit.
They will see for themselves that often young children were tried, sentenced and imprisoned
here in the Jail for the smallest of misdemeanours, for example stealing turnips.
There are plenty of 'hands on' experiences where they can stretch out in the hammock, lie
on a hard wooden bed or be locked behind bars in the airing yards.
They can turn the wheel of the hard labour Crank Machine or feel what it is like to be
strapped to the Whipping Table.
On entry children will receive a Parole Certificate and if they obtain four separate embossed stamps located around the Jail they will achieve early release for good behaviour and a free gift!
Did You Know?In 1820 the Old Prison was the principal Jail of Argyll and housed men, women and children, convicted and unconvicted prisoners as well as the insane in only 8 cells.
